The Wonderful Health Benefits of Matcha – Matcha Green Protein Smoothie

Matcha Latte Tea, Matcha Smoothies, Matcha Ice Cream, Matcha Popsicle.. Oh My!

If there is one thing you will hear me say about health, is that it starts with your nutrition. Getting my three year old daughter to eat healthy has always been an  adventure. As parents, we always want the best for our daughters development; her food is no exception. If I get an opportunity to find new treats packed full of nutrients AND it’s tasty to eat, it’s a win win for mommy and toddler.

Ever since I first tried a Matcha Latte tea, from the first sip, I have been hooked! Now,  I was really craving this more! So whilst shopping at the supermarket I was passing through the tea section, and there it was, I had spotted the green and golden tin-can with Organic Matcha Tea written across.  I really couldn’t wait to get home and try this in a smoothie.

Aside from being a delicious drink, why should you be drinking Matcha?

Here are some fascinating, and shockingly wonderful truths about this incredible tea…

It is packed full of rich antioxidants including the unique powerful class of antioxidants know as catechins. In particular, the catechin EGCg (epigallocatechin gallate) provides potent cancer-fighting and bacteria fighting properties which are not found in other foods.  Matcha may contain up to five times more of this amino acid than common black and green teas.

This also contains disease-fighting amino acid that is named L-Theanine;
Matcha has high amounts of L-theanine this help to enhances mood and aids in concentration and reduce stress. L-theanine uses triggers the following potentially positive responses in the brain for users with anxiety issues.

While Polyphenols, a type of chemical compounds found in matcha widen the blood vessels and improve the flow of blood to the brain. This results in better cognitive abilities. It helps boost metabolism, burning fat, and calories while lowering cholesterol and blood sugar.

Matcha contains the detoxifying and immune boosting chlorophyll, vitamin C, selenium, chromium, zinc and magnesium.  These are very important contributors for immune health if you want to keep you and your children away from cold, flu and cavities.

If you are familiar with green tea, then you may know that Matcha tea has caffeine. Matcha tea contains some caffeine (about 30 mg. per cup) however, this is not nearly the caffeine content of an average cup of coffee (70-75 mg. per cup).

L-Theanine in Matcha releases the caffeine slowly into the bloodstream over a period of 4 to 6 hours – not the same can be said with the caffeine from a cup of coffee.
That said, some children can have caffeine sensitivity and therefore, should be allowed to drink Matcha tea only in moderation; one cup a day would be sufficient here.

You will need:
  • 1 scoop of protein of your choice (I use Garden of Life Protein) preferably vanilla flavored.
  • 2 Frozen Bananas
  • 2 tsp Matcha Green Tea Powder
  • 1 cup (240ml) Light Almond Milk
  1. Add the almond milk to Vitamix Blender, followed by the protein powder, then add your Matcha green tea powder, and frozen bananas.
  2. Turn blender on lower settings, slowly turning to higher speed. Once blended and smooth, pour into a cup of choice & enjoy reaping the delicious benefits!
